  Fall 2005

This course explores the relationship between religion and society in three contemporary Islamic countries. It deals with the nation-state and its impact on religion and religious organizations since the 1950s. It also deals with such religious and secular discourses as Wahhabism, Ba'thism, and the Taliban, their domestic as well as foreign policies, and their impact on the wider Islamic world. A particular attention will be paid to the evolution of these discourses after 9/11 and their position on such as issues as women, revivalism, the West, and the United States.
