This intensive course is designed to serve the needs of persons seeking ordination and privilege of call.

The Institute will meet for twelve intensive days in Hartford, CT in connection with General Synod 26. Class will begin at 2:30 pm Monday, June 18 and end at noon Friday, June 29. The Institute will include evening and weekend activities.
Students are encouraged to do readings and have access to an email account before and after the Institute.
The Institute will meet for four days before Synod begins to review the history and basic structure of the UCC. From Friday, June 22 through Tuesday, June 26 participants will attend General Synod, sitting together during plenary sessions, attending committees, having interviews with key leaders, etc. Each student will be expected to track one issue or area of concern throughout Synod. The three Institute days after Synod will enable students to debrief and examine the wider framework of UCC faith and practice.
All students are expected to do all of the assigned work. Reading lists and books are available through the Hartford Seminary bookstore in advance.

Normally, M.Div. students take UCC History, Theology and Polity as part of their seminary curriculum. However, regularly enrolled seminarians may take the Institute as a credit course if their seminary is willing to allow them to transfer the credits. Hartford Seminary is a fully accredited institution and the course is worth three semester credits.
Efforts will be made to assist students in obtaining housing during the Institute, but
registration for the Institute carries no guarantee of housing.
This course is particularly appropriate for:
- Students who are attending seminaries where UCC History, Theology and Polity courses are not available
- “In Care” students who have been encouraged by their Church and Ministry Committee to participate in the General Synod Institute
- Persons seeking privilege of call who do not live near a seminary where a UCC History, Theology and Polity course is offered
- Pastors from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and pastors holding dual standing in the UCC and another denomination
- Persons exploring becoming part of the UCC
- Regular M.Div. students in UCC related seminaries
Instructors
Kent Siladi
Kent Siladi is the Regional Minister of the South Central Region of the Connecticut Conference. He was a local church pastor for 16 years and has been the instructor of UCC History and Polity at Yale Divinity School. He was recently elected Conference Minister of the Florida Conference of the UCC and will begin his responsibilities there after General Synod.
Barbara Brown Zikmund
Barbara Brown Zikmund is a historian of the UCC and editor of the seven volume “Living Theological Heritage of the United Church of Christ.” She is former President of Hartford Seminary. She writes a monthly online history column on UCC.org titled "The Past as Prologue." She presently lives in Washington, DC where she is a visiting scholar at the Life Cycle Institute at Catholic University of America.
Anita Bradshaw
Clyde J. Steckel
Clyde Steckel is emeritus pofessr of theology
at United Theological Seminary. At United he taught pastoral theology,
eccesiology, and UCC history and polity. He has also been an interim
conference minister and interim parish minister.
Registration Details
Before April 15 (or May 15 for Hartford Seminary students), send to the Registrar at
Hartford Seminary:
- Completed registration form
- tuition payment, and
- a one paragraph statement about who you are and why you need/wish to take this Institute at General Synod.
Two ways to register:
As a non-credit certificate student:
Tuition: $575.
This requires full involvement in the Institute for twelve days, the completion of all in-class assignments and short written papers and a take home final exam. Students who do this successfully receive a certificate verifying to Church and Ministry committees that they have completed the course of study. Applicants also must register for the General Synod ($150, $100 for seminarians) at www.ucc.org.
As a Seminary credit course:
Tuition: $1,460.
To get academic credit students will do all that the non-credit certificate students do (see above), plus a 20-page research paper on some aspect of UCC History, Theology and Polity. The paper is due September 1, 2007. Applicants also must register for the General Synod ($150, $100 for seminarians) at www.ucc.org.
