 There
are several books that have affected my life and understanding of
the world.
The bibliography would extend beyond the capacity of this
snippet.
The best way to express the epiphany reading experience for
me is by relating it to my favorite theologian and mystic Howard
Thurman.
Thurman, former dean of the chapel at both Howard and Boston
Universities, has had a profound impact upon me from my early days
at Yale reading his seminal work Jesus and the Disinherited
which pressed the claims of Jesus’ love-ethic as a model for
interracial interaction during the turbulent pre-civil rights years.
Thurman’s thoughts helped to influence the civil rights
movement by giving it a clear mandate of non-violent protest
dignified by love.
Later I began to plum the depth of his writing, which led me
to the more contemplative works like Meditations of the Heart.
Each of his works has created within me “a ha” moments unlike
any other non-biblical writing.
His writings in the Search for Common Ground have
bottomed my understanding of the interconnectedness of all livings
things and thus have been the catalyst for my involvement at
Hartford Seminary.
