What does Christianity’s explosive growth in Africa mean for the church… and the world? Join us for a screening of “African Christianity Rising: Stories from Zimbabwe” and selected excerpts from a companion film, "Stories from Ghana." These documentaries examine all three kinds of churches typically found in sub-Saharan Africa today: mission-founded, old independent -- or "spiritual" -- churches, and new Pentecostal or charismatic ones. The screenings will be followed by commentary and conversation.
Terence Ranger, Professor of African History at Oxford University, has called the early rough cuts for the films, "the most penetrating and informative material I have ever seen on African Christianity, bringing out its vitality and variety without ever sensationalizing or exoticising."
James Ault is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and scholar educated at Harvard and Brandeis University (Ph.D. in Sociology). As a student of African politics and culture, he lived and worked in Zambia. His first film, “Born Again: Life in a Fundamentalist Baptist Church,” won a Blue Ribbon at the American Film Festival and his book on that project, “Spirit and Flesh” (Knopf 2004), was named one of the 5 best non-fiction books of the year by the Christian Science Monitor. Ault lives in Northampton, MA.
