Muslims and Catholics comprise the two largest religious communities worldwide. Sometimes in the minority, sometimes in the majority, Muslims and Catholics are able to live peacefully in diverse, secular democracies across the world while at the same time identifying with their global communities of faith. Islamic law and Canon law provide guidelines for the faithful to live in these diverse contexts by balancing teachings and principles from scripture, tradition and reason. In this program, Prof. Mattson and Msgr. McCarthy will explore the ways Islamic and Canon law continue to be relevant and dynamic in a rapidly changing world.
Ingrid Mattson is Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim
Relations at Hartford Seminary and director of the Seminary’s Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. She also heads the Seminary’s Islamic Chaplaincy Program and is the author of “The Story of the Qur’an: Its History and Place in Muslim Life.” Mattson earned her Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of Chicago. Her research is focused on Islamic law and society. She is president of the Islamic Society of North America.
Reverend Monsignor John J. McCarthy is Chancellor of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford. He was appointed Chancellor in 2005. Msgr. McCarthy has a degree in civil law and a doctorate in canon law; he has completed studies at Yale University and the University of Chicago, and in Rome at the Gregorian University and at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas.
