Field Trips: Wednesdays, from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., February 6, February 13, February 20, February 27 and March 5 plus
Social Action Events: March and April, schedule to be determined
Hartford Seminary is offering this special opportunity – a noncredit
course within a course – that will give participants an introduction to key social ministries in the Hartford region. We will examine how these ministries started, who keeps them going, where they get support, and what is their influence on the community and in the lives of congregations and their members.
Visit, interview leaders, and study the following eight social ministries:
What we can learn from megachurch ministries with Hartford Seminary Professor Scott Thumma and Pastor Terry Wyles at the expanding Crossroads Community Church, East Hartford
Faith-based ministries that combine secular agencies with Black Church caring with The Rev. James B. Walker and the staff of Phillips Metropolitan CME Church, Hartford
Catholic transformational ministry in the tradition of Dorothy Day at the Catholic Worker House in Hartford with authors, religious leaders and community activists Chris and Jackie AllenDoucot
Islam: How Mosques do ministry in their communities with Dr. Reza Mansoor, president of the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut, Imam Abdullah Antepli and other leaders in growing Muslim groups in the Hartford area
Revising Mainline Ministries for the 21 st Century: From “Center City Churches” to “Hands On Hartford” with Executive Director Paul Christie, Hands on staff and residents at Peter’s Retreat, Hartford
Breakthroughs and barriers in legislative campaigns by the Interfaith Coalition for Equity and Justice with Margaret SteineggerKeyser,
