This position is for a core member of the Hartford Seminary faculty, who will join the Duncan Black Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. The appointment will be made at the junior level.
The successful candidate will lead and administer the Islamic Chaplaincy Program. Administration of the program includes recruitment and advising of chaplaincy students, as well as liaison work with hospitals, colleges, prisons and other institutions for student placement in CPE and field education. The Director of Islamic Chaplaincy will represent the program and Hartford Seminary to various publics, interpreting the nature and the importance of the program, and contributing substantially to the development of this field of study.
As professor, the successful candidate will be engaged in academic teaching and research. The teaching will focus in particular on the knowledge and skills required for Muslim religious leaders in contemporary America. The applicant must have been trained in a relevant academic discipline and have experience of Islamic religious or community leadership.
As a member of the Macdonald Center, the successful candidate will contribute to programs developed for domestic and international students and visitors engaged in Christian-Muslim dialogue. Qualifications include experience in religious leadership of Muslim faith communities, an earned doctorate and a vocational interest in continuing to develop the new field of Islamic chaplaincy.
Interested scholars should address the letter of application and curriculum vitae, along with the names of three references to Dr. Ingrid Mattson, Chair of the Islamic Chaplaincy Search Committee. All materials should be submitted electronically to Valerie Vick at the Macdonald Center: vvick@hartsem.edu. Applications received by November 30, 2009 will receive first consideration. We hope to make an appointment for the candidate to begin by September, 2010. For more information on Hartford Seminary and the Macdonald Center, please visit our website: www.hartsem.edu.
