Interested in the Doctor of Ministry Degree but unsure that you’re ready to commit to the full program?  Concerned about returning to school after years away from the classroom? Just too busy to take on any significant additional commitments?

Enroll in our new Professional Ministries Study Program

In this program, you choose four courses that reflect the breadth of a Hartford Seminary education  You can attend class weekly, every three weeks or complete a course in one week, at your convenience.

Credits earned in this program can be counted toward the D.Min. if you later decide to pursue a D.Min. and are admitted to the program.

What is the Professional Ministries Study Program?

The Professional Ministries Study Program is an educational option for clergy, rabbis, imams and other religious leaders who seek to reflect on their practice of ministry. Students in the program will work with their academic advisor to choose four courses suited to their individual educational objectives.

All credits earned in the program can be counted toward the D.Min. degree if a student later decides to pursue that objective and is admitted to the D.Min. program.

Application and Admission

The Professional Ministries Study Program is open to persons who have three years of ministry experience after the completion of the Master of Divinity degree or its educational equivalent (equivalency is understood to mean three years of post-baccalaureate theological study at accredited graduate institutions).

Applications for the program may be submitted at any time during the year.

Program of Study

Each student must successfully complete 12 credits (typically 4 courses). These credits must be taken in four different topic areas. These include:

  • Scripture
  • Theology
  • Ethics
  • Spirituality, liturgy, and worship
  • Religion and society
  • History
  • Arts of ministry
  • Dialogue

Hartford Seminary requires that at least 6 credits in the Professional Ministries Study Program be taken in courses taught in the classroom on the Hartford Seminary campus. This allows for up to half of the credits required for this program to be taken in a combination of the following formats: off-site courses, on-line courses, and travel seminars.
