Turkish Ministry Donates Encyclopedia
Hartford Seminary is adding a new and important reference resource to the shelves of the Library’s Dillenberger Reading Room: the latest edition of the 39 volume Islam Ansiklopedisi, published in Istanbul. Volumes 1 through 35 are complete; the final four volumes are expected shortly.
The list of editorialists and contributors to the Islam Ansiklopedisi reads like an academic Who’s Who in both Turkish and Islamic studies. The text itself is bi-lingual, with entries in Turkish but with Arabic equivalents given for each item under discussion. The high quality paper makes for excellent four-color reproductions and facsimiles of manuscripts along with photographs of persons, architectural monuments, archeological artifacts, maps, calligraphies, and the like. Each entry is concluded with a bibliography for further research.
A gift to the Seminary from the Turkish Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Ansiklopedisi is a premier reference work in Turkish not only for Islamic studies, but also for Turkish area studies as well. The initial contact with the Ministry to arrange the donation was made by Rifat Karamahmut, a Hartford Seminary master’s degree candidate from Turkey. Professor Yahya Michot of the Macdonald Center and head of the Seminary’s Ph.D. program was also instrumental in obtaining the Ansiklopedisi.
Professor Yehezkel Landau Receives Special Award
Yehezkel Landau, Faculty Associate in Interfaith Relations at Hartford Seminary, has been named a recipient of the 2009 Living Spirit Award by The Spiritual Life Center of Bloomfield, CT.
Prof. Landau is receiving the award for his outstanding contributions to the community, especially as director of the Seminary’s Building Abrahamic Partnerships Program and co-founder of the Open House Center for Jewish-Arab Co-Existence in Israel. >>Full Story<<
Lee Named Chief Development Officer

Heidi Hadsell, Hartford Seminary President, and Bud Heckman, Chief Development Officer, recently attended the first World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists in Istanbul, Turkey. The photos depict some of the activities, including commentary by Hadsell and a panel on which Heckman participated.
Keynote speaker Yehezkel Landau, a professor of interfaith relations at Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, applied the wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Alabama's current problems. Some 250 faith leaders of Alabama, including a group of 25 from Huntsville, attended the forum meant to harness faith communities' energy to solve real-life problems

A lot of people in the west think that Syria is just an Islamic state. They don't know we live in peace. We have to send this message that there is no problem between Muslims and Christians."
