ADAIR
LUMMIS
As a researcher,
I have been most shaped by six co-authored books, products of
research studies in which I have been engaged.
Of particularly personal importance have been those books
in which the senior authors have been at Hartford Seminary but
from fields outside of sociology because then I gain knowledge and
insights, along with the public. For example, working with Yvonne
Yazbeck Haddad, an Islamic scholar and former professor here, on a
study of immigrant mosques in the United States culminated in the
book, Islamic Values in American Life. I learned much about
Islam and how the culture of both native country and host country
affect the religious behavior and daily life of Muslims in the
U.S. Working with faculty member Miriam Therese Winter on a
multi-denominational study of "churched" feminist women
resulted in the book, Defecting in Place. I learned how
women's spirituality can be maintained and used to effect change
in church and society.
In the fifteen denominational study of clergy women and men
with Barbara Brown Zikmund, a church historian and past president
of the Seminary, I gained greater understanding of how
denominational polities interact with current social conditions in
the U.S. to impact clergy's careers and life.
