Biography

Like millions of immigrants who preceded her, my mother came to the United States of America, believing that giving up her life in her native country (South Korea) would bring incomparable opportunities to her children in America.  I am a son of a woman who believed in the American Dream.  I came to the Land of Opportunity at the age of ten, and my family eventually bought a small grocery store in the Bronx where I passed my high school years, working in the store when my friends were having fun in the sun.  I learned during my youth what it means to work hard and how important it is to take advantage of opportunities life has to offer.  Even though my life path was neither straight nor easy, it seemed providential.  I started my college education at Cooper Union, studying engineering, but then transferred to New York University to graduate with a B.A. in Philosophy.  My decision to go to a seminary after college, to do doctoral studies in biblical studies, and to serve as a professor at Hartford Seminary is a result of my sincere desire to know the truth, to love God, and to serve others.
