Strategic Planning Project

Welcome to Hartford Seminary’s Strategic Planning Project page, where you will find information and resources about this important initiative.

The Seminary launched this project on Sept. 16, 2019 with the goal of creating a plan that will lead us in the future. Since then, the project steering team, co-led by Professor Deena Grant and Trustee Nancy Roberts, and our project partner rpk GROUP have collected data and conducted interviews with faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees. Additionally, the project Steering Team engaged in drafting a shared future vision (SFV) for Hartford Seminary.

After months of effort by focus groups and the project Steering Team, Hartford Seminary’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously on March 16, 2020, to adopt the shared future vision presented. A concrete plan to implement the vision is in process.

President Joel N. Lohr shared this message with the Hartford Seminary community following the board’s meeting in March 2020.

For now, I can share that—despite what we might be feeling in this moment—our future is indeed bright: groundbreaking, forward-thinking, and optimistic, one that will leverage our unique strengths and still strong financial position. I can also share that we will move into new and compelling ways to support religion research, develop executive and professional educational programs, design new degrees and immersive programs, and engage with key local and global partners. We will retain a strong focus on Islamic, Jewish, and Christian Studies even while we branch out into new areas to support other religious traditions, seekers, and the non-religious. Our partnerships will be rich, strong, and many, and we will become the nation’s leading resource for interreligious peace studies and research. We will also find new and important ways to support Islamic Chaplaincy and education, as well as support the Islamic institutions that likewise engage in this work. Our programs will likely look quite different in the coming years—some redesigned, some phased out, and some grown into new, groundbreaking ones that are not yet offered in this country. We will indeed lead and serve our world in new ways. I could not be more thrilled.
